BookCrossing, a prominent social networking site for book enthusiasts, confirmed a data breach in August 2022. The breach was associated with a database backup from November 2012, showcasing the potential longevity and delayed discovery of some breaches. This intrusion exposed data related to nearly 1.6 million accounts. Specific details that were compromised included names, usernames, email and IP addresses, dates of birth, and, most concerningly, passwords that were stored in plain text.
