Bord Gais Employee Credit Union Data Breach (2013)

The office of the Data Protection Commissioner is to conduct an investigation after a laptop with information pertaining to up to 900 Bord Gáis employees was stolen from a Dublin-based credit union. The laptop, which was password protected but not encrypted, contained the names, addresses and financial details of affected credit union members. It was the property of the Bord Gáis employees’ credit union, and was stolen on June 4th from its office in Foley Street. A spokeswoman for the credit union said described the matter as an “exceptionally regretful incident”. She said gardaí had been informed of the theft, which occurred when a window in the office was smashed.
